#CharityTuesday roundup - May 31st
Busy week already so let’s just jump right in…
* Tuesday, June 7th - Thursday, June 9th * The 29th Annual Scooper Bowl to benefit The Jimmy Fund (@TheJimmyFund). As if you needed another reason to eat ice cream, now you can eat (as much as you want) for a good cause! The hours each day are 12-8PM. Adults are $8, kids ages 3-9 are $4, and all the munchkins under 3 are free. If you’re a Zipcar (@Zipcar) member, you can get $1 off by flashing your card, or you can text “YUM” to 22122, which also gets you $1 off admission (saw that on a subway advertisement).
* Thursday, June 9th * Tech Gives Back Day (@TechGivesBack) sponsored by TUGG (Technology Underwriting Greater Good), BostInnovation (@BostInnovation), and Boston Cares (@BostonCares). The event is open to startup/tech folks that are looking to volunteer with their companies. According to the TGB Twitter feed, over 550 people from 48 companies will be participating. I’ll be there as a Boston Cares project leader. Can’t volunteer? Come to the after party at Citi Performing Arts Center (@CitiCenter). Tickets!
* Sunday, June 12th * NSTAR’s Walk for Children’s Hospital Boston (@ChildrensBoston). I’ve actually never done this one, but you can sign up to walk 2 miles or 7 miles for this great cause.
Some volunteer opportunities…
Friday Night Supper Club (@FNSP) is looking for a variety of volunteers… help prep for their dinners, assist them with deliveries, pick up food, or even assist staff at Gillette Stadium events to help fundraise for FNSP. For more info: http://bit.ly/jZ4DgK
If Memorial Day had you thinking about how you could help out vets in Boston, check out the New England Center for Homeless Veterans. I’ve helped serve dinner there and it’s just an hour long service. A pretty small commitment considering what they’ve done for our country. In a kind of separate note, Emerson College’s Alumni Weekend is just a couple days away. Amidst the excitement to see my classmates and old friends, I can’t help but think of Torie Snelgrove. Torie was in my American Sign Language class at Emerson. She was actually a Victoria, but to get out of spelling her full name in ASL, she went by Torie (well that was her nickname too). In kind of a freak accident, she was killed during the Red Sox riots of 2004. To many, that’s what she’ll be remembered for. I’ll always remember her as a big Red Sox fan… someone who was fun to gossip with… someone who made me laugh while we occasionally stumbled along through ASL… but most of all, I’ll remember her as being an ambitious journalism student. Her parents set up a scholarship in her name, so if you’re so inclined, please consider donating (enter Snelgrove) to her scholarship fund.
