#CharityTuesday Roundup - February 22nd

(This burger picture will make sense in a few paragraphs)

Hey hey… hope folks are having a good week thus far.

For those of you out there that aren’t familiar with Twitter, there’s this hashtag (aka… a keyword that makes topics easier to search… when you click on it, you see all the tweets/posts that include that hashtag) called #charityTuesday. People often post stories about charities, non-profits, volunteering, or helping out the community. I like to post about local events and opportunities in the area, although I do include some national stuff too.

Anyhoo, I figured it’d be helpful if I put them all on one page minus my banter from the day. That and some of my lazy friends asked me to do this. Did I say lazy? I meant industrious and unable to keep up with my Twitter feed. Cool? Cool.

* All the time * #National Yesterday I saw a Music Drives Us commercial for the first time so of course I tweeted about it. They help support music education and music therapy. Both are quite close to my heart. They hold several events each year, so if you need assistance or want to support them, I definitely recommend you check out their site. http://www.musicdrivesus.org

* This week * #Boston #NYC Room to Grow provides assistance, clothing, books, and other items to babies born into poverty. The Boston office is in need of extra large bags to help clients bring items home this week. Contact Elizabeth by calling 617-859-4545 or e-mailing elizabeth@roomtogrow.org

* For the month of February * #National Winston Flowers will donate 20% of the proceeds from the Charity in Bloom bouquet to the American Heart Association.http://bit.ly/i7B1l7 I remember seeing their flower arrangements when they were donating proceeds to Community Servings and they’re really quite lovely! Also of note, the company Organic Bouquet has a program called Flowers for Good where they always donate a percentage to different charities. http://bit.ly/9ixwbV

* Tuesday, February 22nd * #Boston Last night, Flatbread Pizza Company in Somerville donated a percentage of their pizza sales to Wediko Children’s Services. I know this has obviously passed but that doesn’t mean you can’t check out Wediko to see how else you can help besides eating pizza. :) http://www.wediko.org

* Thursday, February 24th * #Boston Blackstone/Frankling Square Neighborhood Association is holding a fundraiser and silent auction for South End high school seniors in need of financial assistance for their upcoming freshman year studies. The event is at Estragon and they’ll have complimentary appetizers from a few South End restaurants. Admission is $25/person, $40 couple, $30 at the door. http://www.bfsna.org

* Sunday, February 27th * #Boston The Boston Living Center is having their annualDinnerfest this weekend at Smith and Wollensky. This will be my first time at this event thanks to my friend Kat who bought me a ticket for Christmas. The list of restaurants participating is quite long and the auction items look pretty sweet (Paris 5 day adventure for 2?!?!). Tickets are $50. All proceeds go to the BLC’s nutrition, education, and wellness programs. http://bit.ly/aGRV5o

* Wednesday, March 2nd * #Boston For the month of February, folks grew mustaches to raise money for Community Servings, a meals program for folks homebound with critical illnesses. The Mustachio Bashio is their wrap up party! It’s at City Table again this year and I’ve gotta say last year’s party was a blast. The mustaches and entertainment were hilarious, the staff were friendly, and the special cocktails were delicious. Tickets are $50 ($50 donation to CS, $30 is tax-deductible).http://bit.ly/g9qv4F

* Saturday, March 5th * #Boston Will Gilson, chef/owner of Garden at the Cellar, is hosting a pop up restaurant at the Boston Center for Adult Education. Proceeds will go to his mother Jodie, who is the owner of J. Gilson Greenhouses. Two weeks ago her greenhouses were destroyed under the weight of the heavy snow. The menu will feature some amazing local chefs and their mothers’ favorite dishes. $100-$200 per person. http://t.co/dknuJge

Also, on my radar is the B. Good team running for the Boston Marathon. They will be raising money for Back On My Feet, a program that promotes ”self-sufficiency of homeless populations by engaging them in running to build confidence”. B. Good is one of my favorite burger chains in Boston and last year I did a short training run with them… wearing a sweet potato fry outfit. The other day, they posted a pic of the burger outfits the runners will be wearing during the marathon. Now does the picture up top make sense? Keep an eye on their newsletterTwitter feed, or Facebook for info on their training runs… which, by the way, end with some free burger action. The edible kind, not the take home a burger costume kind.
